G-Shock Celebrates 30 Years of the Frogman with the GW8230NT-4 https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/g-shock-celebrates-30-years-of-the-frogman-with-the-gw8230nt-4/ https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/g-shock-celebrates-30-years-of-the-frogman-with-the-gw8230nt-4/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2023 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.watchtime.com/?p=149592 This year G-Shock is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of its now iconic Frogman collection with the debut of the GW8230NT-4. The fiery red execution is the second model from the brand to commemorate the 1993 original, and it takes direct inspiration from the 2nd Generation Frogman DW8200NT that first appeared in 2000. The GW8230NT-4 maintains the converted features that the robust Frogman is known for, while also introducing a contemporary aesthetic and new technical features.

The exterior silhouette is characteristically asymmetrical, with each side of the case featuring different pushers and capabilities. With dimensions of 52mm by 50.3mm by 18 mm, it occupies a bold presence of the wrist, but remains comfortable via its construction in lightweight resin. It is made from an eco-friendly bio-based resin with a vivid red hue that continues throughout the entirety of the integrated strap. The Frogman name is printed along the left hand side of the bezel, while the diving frog logo has a home on the strap just below where it meets the bezel. On the reverse, the diving frog logo is also engraved on the case back, along with the word “30th” to commemorate the anniversary of the Frogman.

The digital dial layout is similar to that of its predecessors, featuring three distinct sections each indicating different functions. Using the pushers on the sides of the case, the user can scroll through each of the functions and they will be displayed on the screen. Ensuring legibility, the dial has a Super-Illuminator, which is a high-brightness LED light that illuminates the surface in any light condition. Maintaining past technology, the dial also facilitates Tough Solar charging technology that uses external light sources to collect energy and reduces the need for battery replacements.

Keeping with G-Shock standards, the new Frogman is shock resistant and water resistant to 200 meters. The complete list of features includes tough solar power technology, a double LED light, a 60 minute countdown timer, a 1/100 Stopwatch (24 Hr), dual time, a daily alarm, a day/date display, dive functions (dive time and surface interval), log data (dive start date and time, dive time), a tide graph, and smartphone linking capabilities.

Pricing for the G-Shock Frogman GW8230NT-4 is marked at $620.

G-Shock Celebrates 40th Birthday with a Robust Trio https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/g-shock-celebrates-40th-birthday-with-a-robust-trio/ https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/g-shock-celebrates-40th-birthday-with-a-robust-trio/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2023 12:55:00 +0000 https://www.watchtime.com/?p=149219 In the four decades of its existence, the G-Shock has become one of the most recognizable in the watch industry, and for good reason. With a tough DNA backed by robust and versatile design, Casio’s G-Shock delivers reliable timekeeping functionality, all while experimenting with changing aesthetic trends and maintaining an accessible price point. Now as the G-Shock celebrates its 40th birthday, the brand is releasing a trio of models in homage to the original design to kick off the festivities. The ref. DW5040PG-1, ref. GMWB5000PS-1, and ref. GMWB5000PG-9 embody G-Shock’s toughness, and bringing a contemporary edge to the classic design.

The first model in the trio is the ref. DW5040PG-1 nicknamed the Project Team “Tough” model, by the brand. It is a direct reference to the original G-Shock ref. DW5000C, sharing a case silhouette that has become characteristic of the brand with its pseudo-rectangular bezel and integrated strap. For materials, the brand utilizes recrystallized stainless-steel for the caseback, a black IP and recrystallized stainless-steel buckle, and a band loop with gold colored IP. The black-colored bezel is made from a bio-based resin, and seemingly all of the materials reflect the contemporary importance of reducing the brand’s environmental impact. The caseback of the ref. DW5040PG-1 is engraved with the 40th anniversary logo while four stars on the band loop commemorate the four decades of G-Shock.

The ref. DW5040PG-1 is shock resistant and water resistant to 200 meters in true G-Shock fashion. Its features include a daily alarm, a 1/100 stopwatch (24 Hr), a countdown timer (24 Hr), a multi-function alarm, an EL backlight, and a flash alert.

Retail pricing for the G-Shock ref. DW5040PG-1 Project Team “Tough” is marked at $300.

Completing the trio are two GMWB5000 models clad in a steel that debut deep-layer hardening and recrystallization technologies into the G-Shock line. This process is created by infusing carbon into the surface of the steel, ultimately making it more robust and resistant to abrasion. Not only does it enhance the surface strength of each watch, but it also yields unique visual differences in the crystalline grain of the material. Each model has a DLC coated, screw-lock case back engraved with the 40th-anniversary logo. The ref. GMWB5000PS-1 has a bright silver-tone exterior while the ref. GMWB5000PG-9 sports a warm yellow bronze colored packaging.

In line with G-Shock standards, the GMWB5000 models are shock resistant and water resistant to 200 meters. The complete list of features includes world time functionality (38 time zones), a 1/100 Stopwatch (24 Hr), a countdown timer (24 Hr), multi-function alarms, a display that swaps between date and month, and a multilingual day-of-week display.

Pricing for the ref. GMWB5000PS-1 and ref. GMWB5000PG-9 is marked at $870.

Beware! G-Shock Releases New Frogman Timepiece https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/beware-g-shock-releases-new-frogman-timepiece/ https://www.watchtime.com/wristwatch-industry-news/beware-g-shock-releases-new-frogman-timepiece/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2023 13:23:00 +0000 https://www.watchtime.com/?p=147182 Mother Nature has long been an inspiration in the world of watches. The same rings true for animals and their habitats. A frog, however, is a rather unusual creature to be associated with a timepiece, especially the poison dart frog, a rare species found in the Amazon region of South America. Well, Casio G-Shock is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Frogman series with the GWFA1000APF1. Its design is inspired by this small amphibian.

A limited edition, its bold look is accentuated by a multicolored, layered carbon bezel and stain-resistant fluoroelastomer strap with polarized paint. Vibrant black, orange and blue are woven into organic patterns that mimic the beautiful colors of the poison dart frog. This multicolor design is accentuated by similar colors on the dial and clear resin for the bezel components. As a further nod to the animal, the back of the carbon monocoque case is engraved with the iconic frog symbol.

The GWFA1000APF1 is equipped with Super Illuminator (high-brightness LED light) to maintain readability in the dark, and dual coil motors are used for the hour, minute and indicator hands for high-speed operation and quick switching between time, dive, tide and other modes.

As a true G-Shock timepiece, the GWFA1000APF1 boasts a high level of shock and magnetic resistance, water resistance to 200 meters, Tough Solar power, Multi-Band 6, and Bluetooth capabilities that connect the watch to the G-Shock app.

The Casio G-Shock Frogman GWFA1000APF1 is available with pricing is marked at $1,100.

The latest addition to the full-metal G-Shock lineup is the GM-B2100. The release is more than simply a conversion of the GA-2100, one of the hits of recent years, into a full-metal version. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in evidence in the new model contain evidence of how the design and functionality of the series continue to evolve, as well as hints for what the future may hold.

Released in 2019, the GA-2100 (right) proved a worldwide hit, with its octagonal bezel giving it a distinctive appearance and usability. The original iteration is now joined by the GM-B2100 (left), which brings a full-metal overhaul to the appearance of the watch as well as featuring further evolutions to design details and functions.

The GM-B2100 marks the latest addition to the full-metal series. Its exterior design is practically the same as the design of the previous three models. Resin versions of the G-Shock are produced by injection molding, in which resin is injected into a metal mold. In the full metal series, however, the watches are made by pressing and forging stainless steel plates. The complex shape of the G-Shock watches means they cannot be produced in a single press, and the full metal series uses more than 10 pressing stages. Other processes, including annealing and polishing, are carried out between each pressing. These are repeated more than 10 times before the application of the final polishing process, so that the manufacture of the watch exterior takes a considerable amount of time.

The third installment in the full metal series, incorporating a stainless steel cladding on the basis of the GA-2100 model with octagonal bezel that appeared in 2019. The silver and black models use a single black tone for the dial, maintaining the cool and stylish image of the 2100 series. Tough Solar gives around 18 months on a full charge (power save mode). Stainless steel case (49.8 x 44.4 mm).

When the idea of a full-metal version of the G-Shock was first raised seven years ago, Casio immediately knew that the biggest challenge would be to come up with a design that would guarantee the shock resistance expected of a G-Shock watch. In the end, Casio had to redesign the entire internal structure of the watch from scratch. Although stainless steel is more resilient to shock than the resin materials used in most G-Shock watches, its higher specific gravity means that the watch sustains a considerable shock if it is dropped.

After considerable trial and error, the company finally arrived at a fundamentally different shock resistance structure from that used in conventional resin models. Absorbent cushioning made of fine resin is set between the center case, which protects the module, and the stainless steel top bezel. This acts as a damper and protects the watch even from strong shocks if the watch is dropped. This design successfully protects the module that is the heart of the watch.

The shock resistance structure in the full metal series: the black components made from fine resin are placed on top of the center case (the cylindrical black part) that protects the module that is the heart of the watch, before the stainless steel top bezel is stacked on top of this. The fine resin parts act as cushioning, protecting the module from external pressure and shock.

Another improvement in the full metal version of the watch involved the attachment between the case and bracelet. In resin G-Shock watches, the case and bracelet are connected by two prongs, but the full-metal model uses a new three-pronged lug structure. With the two-pronged structure, there was a risk that the connecting pipe joining the case and the bracelet might buckle under the impact of a shock if the watch were dropped. Increasing the number of prongs disperses shocks to the connecting pipes and button shafts.

The full-metal models of the G-Shock feature an altered lug design that incorporates three prongs joining the case to the bracelet. This disperses shocks to the connecting pipes if the watch is dropped, and was specially created for the full-metal model in order to reduce the risk of buckling and distortion to the connecting pipes and button shafts.

The GM-B2100 incorporates the same shock resistance structure. While using the same screw-lock case back that is shared by all the full-metal G-Shock watches, by paring away flab from the center case and the inner edge of the top bezel and shrinking the clearance between the top surface of the bezel and the glass face, the design successfully gives the latest model the distinctively slim appearance and dimensions of the 2100 series. In fact, the new watch has the thinnest dimensions yet seen in the full-metal series, at just 12.8mm, just 1mm thicker than the GA-2100—eloquent testimony to the remarkable dedication shown by the design team in balancing the competing aims of shock resistance and streamlined dimensions.

Connectivity With a Focus on Practicality and Function

Of course, the GM-B2100 not only combines excellent shock resistance with a robust appearance. It also comes with the complete range of practical functions typical of G-Shock watches. Perhaps most noteworthy are the Mobile Link/Application Link functions. By connecting to a smartphone via Bluetooth, these allow the watch to correct itself automatically according to precise data obtained from the smartphone. The watch is also compatible with World Time settings for nearly 300 cities, making it possible to check the time immediately in a pre-set city on the watch.

(Left) Like previous iterations in the full metal series, the GM-B2100 comes equipped with Mobile Link functionality, and Bluetooth connectivity. Setting of accurate time and World Time settings can be done easily via the dedicated Casio Watches app.
(Right) The watch incorporates back-lighting using high luminance double LEDs for excellent readability even in the dark.

The watch can also provide reminders of appointments made with the dedicated CASIO WATCHES smartphone app, and also comes with a handy “phone search” function. As mentioned above, the GM-B2100 features Tough Solar power. In terms of power, the watch is a truly reliable partner: On a full charge the watch can be used for approximately seven months, even with low exposure to sunlight, and for up to 18 months in power-save mode.

The GM-B2100 has a sturdier and more robust feel than ever before in its new full metal incarnation. The transformation from the resin model GA-2100 also gives it a more polished appearance, making it wearable with a jacket as well as more casual styles.

The GM-B2100 is not simply a full metal version of a previous hit model. This latest addition to the series serves to expand the full-metal G-Shock lineup as well as adding a new variation to the 2100 series at the same time. This is possible thanks to the G-Shock’s continuing evolution over the years since it was first released. Casio has continued to evolve the functions of the watch as well as regularly updating designs to ensure that the series has maintained its contemporary feel since the release of the first watch in 1983. The GM-B2100 is the most advanced model in the G-Shock lineup so far—one that whets the appetite for further evolutions and developments to come. It lives up to its designers’ aspirations that the series will develop into a “next-generation masterpiece.”
